THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Integrating high-density functional carpentry—including a piano station, a dual-user executive home office, and a custom tatami bedroom—while maximising light reflection along a long, deep footprint.
THE BRIEF & COLLABORATION
When an apartment needs to support a wide range of intense lifestyle activities—including high-level acoustic study, remote corporate workloads, and multi-generational rest—traditional room partitions fail. They block light and split the home into small, dark boxes. For this spacious apartment, Vitas Design SG threw out the traditional segmented playbook. By wrapping extensive custom carpentry runs in floor-to-ceiling mirrored paneling and using low-slung, multi-level platform geometry, the team turned a linear layout into an interconnected, multi-layered home that feels incredibly airy and light-filled.
SEQUENTIAL SPATIAL WALKTHROUGH: A Guided Movement Across Fluid Volumes
1. THE COMMUNAL GREAT ROOM & PIANO STATION
The main social hall prioritises a clear, open flow while giving specialised personal interests a prominent place in the layout.
• The Structured Dining Axis: A sleek glass-topped dining table sits paired with light timber chairs, perfectly framed by a full-height wall feature wrapped in mirrored glass. This design choice instantly double-tracks the room's visual width.
• The Integrated Acoustic Nook: Directly opposite the dining zone, a black upright piano sits cleanly integrated into a custom timber housing run. This configuration allows music to fill the communal space naturally while ensuring the heavy instrument does not obstruct walking paths.
2. THE LINEAR ENTERTAINMENT LOUNGE
The communal footprint transitions smoothly into a dedicated relaxation zone, defined by long horizontal lines.
• The Extended Media Wall: A long, handleless media console floats completely off the ground, wrapped in rich, warm oak laminates. Backed by hidden upper cove lighting and framed by large-format polished floor tiles, this installation pulls natural light deep into the core of the layout.
3. THE DUAL-USER EXECUTIVE STUDIO
Remote productivity is integrated directly into the structural core of the home rather than being added as a decorative afterthought.
• The Mirrored Wardrobe Threshold: Entering the home office reveals a massive run of full-height cabinetry. The wardrobe doors are finished entirely in tinted mirrors, masking the deep storage capacity while bouncing light across the workspace.
• The High-Capacity Work Desk: A long, L-shaped timber study desk easily accommodates dual monitors and heavy documentation. Framed by dark window blinds and vertical open bookshelves, this zone provides a highly professional, focused environment for remote work.
4. THE TATAMI LIBRARY & STUDY ZONE
The secondary room functions as a highly flexible multi-generational space, merging storage with relaxation.
• The Elevated Storage Platform: A custom-built tatami floor platform serves as an open play or reading lounge. This structure features integrated hidden drawers underneath to maximise storage space.
• The Full-Height Bookshelf Wall: A massive wall of open timber cubby shelving frames the platform, complete with an integrated corner study desk to streamline reading hours.
5. THE MINIMALIST MASTER SUITE
The primary resting quarters transition into a softer, hotel-inspired colour palette designed to encourage rest.
• The Illuminated Floating Canopy: A soft low-profile custom headboard features integrated bedside tables and warm ambient reading spotlights.
• The Mirrored Horizon Wall: The entire upper perimeter behind the bed is clad in an unbroken band of horizontal mirror paneling, making the low-profile suite feel remarkably tall, spacious, and airy.
• The Linear Vanity Extension: Positioned along the window line is a slim, minimalist makeup dressing table that sits flush against the wardrobe core, ensuring an unobstructed pathway through the room.
MATERIALS & ACCENTS SPOTLIGHT
The success of this highly functional, storage-dense floor plan relies on a disciplined repetition of premium finishes:
• Tinted & Clear Mirror Paneling: Deployed across the dining core, office wardrobes, and master bedroom feature walls to continuously extend long sightlines.
• Medium-Toned Natural Oak Laminates: Applied continuously across the media console, tatami platforms, and desk runs to weave organic warmth throughout the home.
• Hidden LED Cove Strips: Embedded beneath the floating consoles and display shelves to erase harsh architectural shadows.
THE VITAS DIFFERENCE
This project demonstrates that heavy, multi-functional lifestyles can be seamlessly accommodated within a single apartment without creating spatial clutter. By choosing unified wood tones, floating structures, and custom mirrored layouts, Vitas Design SG delivered a highly organised home customised entirely to the owners' daily habits, timeline, and budget.
