THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Overcoming structural compartmentalisation to optimise natural airflow and sunlight across a deep, linear layout without sacrificing defined boundary lines between communal, culinary, and private zones.
THE BRIEF & COLLABORATION
When the owner of this Singapore HDB flat approached Vitas Design SG, she brought a clear vision: she wanted an open, breezy environment that maximised natural light while maintaining distinct, functional zones for daily life.
Working hand-in-hand with the client, our design team reconfigured the traditional layout to prioritise visual connectivity. By re-evaluating the boundaries between the communal areas, we unlocked a sense of expansive freedom rarely felt in standard apartment floor plans, ensuring every square foot serves a distinct purpose.
SEQUENTIAL SPATIAL WALKTHROUGH
1. THE COMMUNAL LIVING SPACE
The living room serves as an immediate study in maximising natural illumination. Standard walls yield to floor-to-ceiling sheer drapery that diffuses harsh afternoon sunlight into a soft, even glow across the light maple flooring.
• Smart Carpentry: A minimalist, wall-mounted floating media console anchors the entertainment zone, keeping the floor area clear to expand the visual field.
• Lifestyle Value: Instead of heavy, imposing furniture, a low-profile patterned sofa and lightweight accent stool keep sightlines entirely unobstructed, inviting immediate relaxation.
2. THE INTEGRATED DINING & BREAKFAST BAR
Moving further into the home, the boundary between the living and dining zones is intelligently defined by a half-height boundary wall. This clever structural intervention provides a dedicated breakfast bar or workspace platform without closing off the room.
• Dual Ceiling Fans: Two strategically positioned ceiling fans maintain consistent air circulation from the dining table right through to the main seating area.
• Cultural Context: Recessed niches and tailored wall hooks display traditional Chinese calligraphy plaques, adding a deeply personal narrative to an otherwise clean, modern architectural frame.
3. THE EFFICIENT CULINARY ZONE
The kitchen embraces a classic L-shaped configuration that streamlines cooking workflows. Bright white Shaker-style cabinetry pairs with durable stone countertops to maintain the home’s airy aesthetic.
• Functional Integration: A deep, farmhouse-style apron sink handles heavy-duty utility, while an overhead stainless steel exhaust hood keeps the semi-open layout pristine and smoke-free.
• Textural Detail: A mosaic-patterned tile backsplash introduces subtle geometric texture while remaining incredibly easy to wipe down after meal prep.
4. THE VIBRANT PRIVATE SANCTUARY
The master bedroom shifts the design narrative from neutral serenity to confident, personal expression. A bold cobalt blue feature wall acts as a striking backdrop against the crisp white headboard.
• Smart Storage: Smooth, floor-to-ceiling sliding wardrobe doors disappear seamlessly into the wall, offering vast storage capacity without compromising valuable floor space around the bed.
• Corner Glazing: Corner windows wrapped in delicate white sheers frame views of the surrounding neighbourhood, ensuring even the private quarters feel bright and connected to the outside world.
MATERIALS & ACCENTS SPOTLIGHT
• Light Maple Flooring: Used consistently across the entire floor plan to tie the communal and private spaces into a unified whole.
• Sheer Textile Elements: Soft linens diffuse light beautifully, softening the hard lines of the apartment's architecture.
• Balanced Textiles: Vibrant, detailed bedding patterns and floral upholstery add layers of warmth against clean, monochromatic white cabinetry.
