THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Maximising a compact floor plan through fluid multi-functional zones, seamless storage integration, and concealed flexible utility spaces.
THE BRIEF & COLLABORATION
When dealing with the compact footprints typical of contemporary Singapore housing, homeowners frequently face a compromise between storage capacity and open, liveable breathing room. For this project, the owners sought a home that felt expansive, uncluttered, and highly adaptive to daily life.
Partnering closely with Vitas Design SG, the layout was reimagined not through rigid room divisions, but through an architecture of concealment. By utilising precision-engineered custom joinery, the design team shaped a fluid environment that configures itself dynamically to the routines of its inhabitants.
SEQUENTIAL SPATIAL WALKTHROUGH
1. THE COMMUNAL LIVING ZONE: Visual Continuity Meets Secret Utility
Upon entering the living area, the eye is immediately drawn to a striking feature wall characterised by a sharp, asymmetrical geometric colour-blocked pattern. This architectural canvas serves a double purpose. In its closed state, it functions as a clean, graphic backdrop to the plush grey seating arrangement, perfectly balanced by a raw timber coffee table.
With a smooth slide of the timber-grain track panel, the feature wall reveals a fully integrated home workspace. Complete with floating open display shelving, a dedicated task desk, and warm under-cabinet LED strip lighting, this micro-office provides a distraction-free productivity zone that can be instantly tucked away when the workday ends. Across the room, the television display is anchored against a textured, light-toned stone feature wall, framed by slim floating ledges that maximise floor area.
2. THE DINING & KITCHEN FOYER: Transparency and Flow
Moving deeper into the shared zones, the dining space bridges the gap between relaxation and culinary creation. A glass-topped dining table paired with woven-seat chairs and a rustic timber bench maintains low visual bulk, allowing light to cascade across the open floor plan. Embedded within the adjacent wall panelled system are custom display niches, perfect for showing curated objects.
The kitchen transitions seamlessly behind a floor-to-ceiling sliding glass partition. This architectural choice provides the ideal balance for Singaporean lifestyles: it keeps heavy cooking aromas contained within the wet kitchen while ensuring daylight penetrates deep into the core of the home. Inside, the kitchen features a minimalist palette of matte light-grey cabinetry, black countertops, integrated stainless steel appliances, and an expansive seamless glass backsplash that is incredibly effortless to clean.
3. THE PRIVATE QUARTERS: Space-Saving Sanctuary
The master bedroom suite showcases a brilliant masterclass in tight-quarters spatial optimisation. To preserve floor area around the bed, Vitas Design SG engineered a custom L-shaped wardrobe system that wraps the perimeter of the room.
The standout innovation here is the disappearing vanity station. Tucked neatly alongside the wardrobe line is a dedicated dressing mirror and vanity counter. When additional space is needed, the upholstered vanity stool slides entirely flush underneath the unit, creating a completely unobstructed walkway to the sliding timber doors. A built-in niche directly next to the bed headboard serves as an integrated nightstand, eliminating the need for standalone furniture.
MATERIALS & ACCENTS SPOTLIGHT
The interior style relies on a curated, disciplined palette of materials to establish a unified design language across all zones:
• Asymmetrical Graphic Laminates: Alternating ash-wood grains with deep, textured slate charcoal to create depth and visual interest without adding physical bulk.
• Warm Under-Cabinet LED Lighting: Strategically placed underneath shelves and vanity nooks to lift shadows, cast a soft glow, and create a sense of vertical height.
• Textured Stone Wall: Utilised in the living area to introduce organic tactile contrast against the flat surfaces of the custom cabinetry.
THE VITAS DIFFERENCE
This residence demonstrates that small-scale living does not require sacrificing lifestyle quality or aesthetic ambition. By prioritising bespoke, multi-purpose carpentry and layout transparency, Vitas Design SG executed a beautiful transformation aligned precisely with the client's budget and functional daily needs.
