THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Optimising a compact floor plan through multi-functional, space-saving carpentry without sacrificing cultural traditions or professional utility.
THE BRIEF & COLLABORATION
When the homeowners approached Vitas Design SG, their requirements demanded a delicate structural balancing act typical of modern Singapore living. They needed a space that seamlessly accommodated a dedicated home office, a prominent traditional altar, ample storage, and comfortable dining options—all within a standard, compact apartment footprint.
Collaborating closely with the client, our design team looked beyond static floor plans. Instead of building rigid walls that constrict movement and light, we engineered a layout driven by smart, dual-purpose architectural features. The resulting interior demonstrates that tight urban spaces can feel open, highly organised, and deeply personal.
SEQUENTIAL SPATIAL WALKTHROUGH
1. THE COMMUNAL HUB: Living Room & Hidden Dining
The main living zone serves as a masterclass in space optimisation. The entire media wall is clad in a clean, vertical grain light-wood laminate that conceals storage and frames a flush-mounted television. Directly opposite, a neutral leather sofa pairs with a low-profile coffee table featuring integrated, slide-out upholstered stools.
The true innovation rests within the custom-built carpentry housing the family altar. Positioned respectfully along the main circulation path, the lower half of this unit conceals a pull-out table and matching bench. The walkway remains completely unobstructed when tucked away but instantly transforms the room’s function from a relaxed lounge into another functional zone when extended.
2. THE CULINARY CORRIDOR: Dual-Purpose Kitchen
Transitioning into the kitchen, the layout maximises a narrow gallery configuration. The wet zone features crisp white upper cabinets contrasted by deep charcoal lower units, keeping the visual weight low.
Across from the primary cooking run, we installed an expansive counter that doubles as a secondary workspace and breakfast bar. Embodying our focus on adaptability, a section of this counter features a heavy-duty, pull-out extension mechanism. This instantly expands the countertop surface area for baking, food preparation, or hosting guests, then glides back flush into the cabinetry frame when not in use.
3. THE PRIVATE SANCTUARIES: Main Bedroom & Study
The master bedroom maintains a restrained colour palette to promote rest. This custom full-height wardrobe boasts sleek back-painted white laminate sliding doors framed in dark bronze laminate. This material choice reflects light across the room, mitigating the visual bulk of standard cabinetry. Adjacent to the bed, a dedicated workspace is seamlessly integrated into the corner, maintaining a clear workflow without encroaching on the rest area.
In the secondary bedroom, a lighter oak tone dominates. To maximise square footage, a floating vanity table with a circular mirror is built directly into the side of the wardrobe. This clever configuration eliminates the need for separate furniture pieces, keeping the floor space clear and fluid.
MATERIALS & ACCENTS SPOTLIGHT
The cohesiveness of this home relies on a strictly curated palette of finishes:
• Tactile Wood Laminates: A balance of warm oak and deeper walnut tones establishes texture and warmth across all custom units.
• Reflective Surfaces: Polished large-format floor tiles and back-painted glass cabinet fronts bounce ambient light into deeper corners of the flat.
• Warm Architectural Lighting: Strategic recessed spotlights and integrated LED strips illuminate display niches, softening the geometry of the custom carpentry.
THE VITAS DIFFERENCE
This project highlights our core philosophy: exceptional interior design is not about working with unlimited square footage, but about unlocking the hidden potential of the space you have. By engineering custom, metamorphic furniture solutions, Vitas Design SG delivered a highly functional home tailored to the family's daily rituals, budget, and lifestyle.
