KEY VISUAL STYLE
Japandi Minimalism (incorporating clean Muji-inspired functionalism, warm oak fluted timber elements, handleless cabinetry, and soft matte cream tones).
THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Overcoming a restrictive, narrow apartment footprint (specifically concealing prominent structural household bomb shelter doors, maximising a tight galley kitchen corridor, and integrating multi-functional study-sleep zones into compact bedrooms without creating visual clutter).
THE BRIEF & COLLABORATION: Engineering Space Through Empathy
When a space is constrained by modern urban footprints, standard furniture choices often fall short. For this residential project in Singapore, the homeowners sought a sanctuary grounded in the quiet clarity of Japandi and Muji-inspired principles. Rather than simply filling the floor plan, the team at Vitas Design SG collaborated closely with the clients to co-create an environment where structural architecture and custom carpentry become one. The result is a highly tailored footprint that proves sophisticated, human-centered design is entirely achievable on any scale.
SEQUENTIAL SPATIAL WALKTHROUGH
1. THE ENTRYWAY & ARCHITECTURAL FACADE: First Impressions Are Made of Concealed Lines
Can a wall do more than just divide a room?
The journey begins at the structural threshold, where the design immediately addresses a common issue in local apartment layouts: exposed household bomb shelters and structural disruptions. Vitas Design SG wrapped the entire entryway corridor in floor-to-ceiling vertical fluted timber panels. This custom carpentry works double-duty, concealing utility doorways and storage zones into a singular continuous canvas. A curved structural archway softens the transition, guiding foot traffic seamlessly into the main communal zones while instantly setting a calm, ordered tone for anyone entering the home.
2. THE LIVING & COMMUNAL SPACE: Light, Suspension, and Visual Weightlessness
What happens when you lift everything off the floor?
In the main living arena, the illusion of an expansive floor area is achieved through meticulous suspension. The entertainment wall features a custom-built floating TV console clad in a muted cream laminate. By elevating the cabinetry, the floor plane extends uninterrupted to the walls, making the footprint feel significantly larger. Soft LED cove lighting runs beneath the cabinetry and behind the paneling, washing the cream-toned walls in a warm glow that removes harsh shadows and replaces the need for bulky floor lamps.
3. The Kitchen & Dining Foyer: Efficiency Reimagined for the Modern Culinary Corridor
How do you turn a narrow thoroughfare into a social anchor?
The kitchen redefines the traditional galley layout by turning a narrow footprint into a high-performance culinary workspace. Cream sintered countertops contrast against light oak grain handleless cabinetry, maintaining a bright profile that reflects incoming natural light. Instead of a traditional bulky dining table, a sleek breakfast bar is integrated alongside the window frame, paired with minimalist solid wood stools. To separate heavy cooking from the living zones without blocking sightlines, a slim white-framed fluted glass sliding door was installed, maintaining spatial flow while containing fumes.
4. The Private Zones: Dedicated Micro-Environments for Rest and Focus
Can a small bedroom accommodate sleep, work, and storage simultaneously?
Moving into the private quarters, the design transitions into intelligent multi-functional zones. The master suite utilises a raised wooden platform bed that completely eliminates the need for a freestanding bed frame while offering deep storage drawers beneath the mattress. Connected directly to the platform is a seamless floating study desk, complete with overhead display cabinets and integrated task lighting. By keeping the study and vanity carpentry integrated into the room's perimeter, the center of the room remains clear and open.
5. The Bathrooms: Tactile Continuity in Compact Wet Zones
How do you bring architectural cohesion into the smallest room in the house?
The bathrooms extend the apartment's design narrative using highly durable, tactile materials. Realistic wood-look floor tiles run through the space, offering the warmth of timber with the absolute waterproofing required for wet areas. Streamlined glass shower partitions keep the sightlines open, while custom-built floating wooden vanities and matching rectangular mirror cabinets ensure that storage remains tucked away, leaving the surfaces clean and clutter-free.
MATERIALS & ACCENTS SPOTLIGHT: The Minimalist Palette
To tie the entire home together, a strict material discipline was enforced throughout the renovation:
• Vertical Fluted Paneling: Used as a visual anchor across corridors to hide doors and add texture.
• Muted Cream & Light Oak Laminates: Chosen to bounce natural light deep into the floor plan.
• Fluted Glass & Matte White Aluminium: Introduced to add subtle graphic contrast without interrupting visual transparency.
THE VITAS DIFFERENCE
High-level design is not about the size of the floor plan; it is about the precision of the execution. This project highlights the Vitas Design SG commitment to honoring our clients' daily rhythms, budgets, and timelines without compromising on craftsmanship. Every hidden door, floating cabinet, and recessed light strip was built with purpose.
