THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Maximising a narrow, linear HDB floor plan to incorporate heavy custom storage and a dedicated dining zone without constricting communal walkways or reducing the flow of natural light.
THE BRIEF & COLLABORATION: Engineering Space for Contemporary Life
Modern Singapore HDB living requires smart geometry to balance everyday utility with structural openness. In this recently completed residential project, the homeowners collaborated closely with Vitas Design SG to completely reconfigure their linear floor plate. The design team focused on implementing multi-functional, integrated carpentry alongside a bright, neutral material palette, proving that high-level, tailored space planning can turn standard apartment dimensions into an unconfined, custom home layout.
SEQUENTIAL SPATIAL WALKTHROUGH
1. THE ENTRYWAY & COFFEE FOYER: Framing Function at the Threshold
• Hook: An entryway should act as a functional decompression zone, welcoming you home with clean lines.
• The Walkthrough: The entrance rejects typical shoe rack clutter by implementing a sleek, floor-to-ceiling custom storage wall finished in matte white. The design team integrated a dedicated coffee station recess complete with built-in warm LED strip lighting and timber backing accents to serve as a functional design statement. Directly opposite, a low-slung divider island features a stone-texture waterfall edge countertop, acting as a compact dining table that anchors the transition into the main living quarters.
2. THE LIVING & COMMUNAL LOUNGE: Amplifying Light and Linear Volume
• Hook: Expansive living zones rely on flush surfaces to keep the eye moving forward.
• The Walkthrough: Moving past the foyer island, the layout expands into a bright, open communal area. The entertainment center utilises a long, floating matte white console table that keeps the floor completely clear, enhancing the sense of room volume. A soft grey L-shaped sectional couch sits against a warm, muted sand-coloured accent wall, illuminated by a combination of flush recessed downlights and a dark timber ceiling fan. Striped roman blinds offer precise control over the incoming natural light, keeping the lounge bright and inviting.
3. THE PARALLEL GALLEY KITCHEN: Culinary Precision and Seamless Transitions
• Hook: High-performance kitchens balance continuous prep space with hidden appliance architecture.
• The Walkthrough: The kitchen area adopts a highly efficient parallel galley layout that opens seamlessly toward the back utility patio. The cooking side features a slab of white marble-veined quartz for the backsplash and countertops, creating a bright backdrop that reflects overhead task lighting. Handleless lower cabinetry in clean white laminate frames the induction hob and built-in oven perfectly. This layout groups all prep paths tightly together, ensuring smooth movement during meal preparation.
4. THE MASTER SUITE: Dark Timber Textures for Deep Rest
• Hook: Private sleeping zones achieve tranquility by shifting toward a richer, grounded material weight.
• The Walkthrough: In the master bedroom, the palette transitions into deep, comforting earth tones. The custom bedhead features full-height dark wood-grain paneling paired with integrated bedside niches lined with warm, concealed reading downlights. Fresh indoor greenery sits on the integrated side ledges, bringing an organic texture against the crisp white bed linens and neutral wall colours. Horizontal window blinds screen out external distractions, creating an ideal setting for deep rest.
5. THE MONOLITHIC BATHROOMS: Sculptural Details in Compact Enclaves
• Hook: Treating utility surfaces with large-format textures expands the perception of small rooms.
• The Walkthrough: The private bathrooms utilise a sophisticated, texture-driven theme to combat standard small bathroom dimensions. Large-format grey stone tiles cover the walls and floors, reducing grout lines and creating a unified finish. The shower zone is divided by clean black-framed glass shower panels, while the vanity features a striking matte white oval vessel basin resting on a custom floating concrete-look counter. A backlit mirror floating panel provides soft illumination, showing how small spaces can feel premium.
MATERIALS & ACCENTS SPOTLIGHT
To link the communal rooms with the private suites, the design uses a tightly managed mix of high-contrast materials. Crisp matte white laminates and veined quartz counter surfaces dominate the entryways and kitchen paths to maximise light dispersion. These clean surfaces are strategically balanced by rich oak vinyl plank flooring, dark wood-grain wall paneling in the master suite, and industrial black iron light fixtures, proving that contrasting elements can tie an entire home together beautifully.
THE VITAS DIFFERENCE
This HDB residence stands as a clear example of what Vitas Design SG brings to Singapore home renovations: space-smart carpentry, clean transitions, and custom spaces designed around authentic client identities. By prioritising hidden storage infrastructure and fluid paths, the team delivered an elevated living space that respects both the project timeline and budget limits.
