THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Reconfiguring a multi-generational layout to integrate a large walk-in closet, a dedicated study, and a home bar pantry while maintaining an open, breezy flow across long corridors.
THE BRIEF & COLLABORATION
Standard HDB apartments are often defined by rigid layouts that leave little room for deeply personalised lifestyles. When a family requires distinct functional spaces—such as a gourmet kitchen, an entertainment bar, a walk-in wardrobe, and a productive home office—traditional room divisions fall short. For this resale apartment, Vitas Design SG approached the floor plan as a continuous, interconnected canvas. By pairing floating cabinetry structures with warm indirect lighting and architectural wood accents, the design team unlocked premium multi-functional utility without making the flat feel crowded.
SEQUENTIAL SPATIAL WALKTHROUGH: A Masterclass in Spatial Continuity
1. THE ENTRYWAY & CUSTOM SETTEE LOUNGE
The home opens with an immediate sense of decompression. Rather than walking into an abrupt living wall, the foyer transitions into a custom mudroom zone. A minimalist, full-height storage column floats off the floor, illuminated from below by soft LED strip lighting. Directly beneath the windows, a matching built-in timber bench settee provides a practical shoe-changing zone, framed by sleek wooden Venetian blinds that softly filter incoming afternoon sunlight.
2. THE COMMUNAL BAR & DRY PANTRY AXIS
Stepping into the main thoroughfare reveals a sophisticated hospitality-inspired addition: a dedicated dry pantry and coffee bar.
• Integrated Countertop: A long run of handleless matte white cabinetry features an open niche lined in deep walnut wood grain. This niche houses a water purifier, display art, and power tracks for morning prep.
• Continuous Spatial Axis: The layout demonstrates how a long corridor remains open, airy, and uncluttered by avoiding heavy, protruding partitions, allowing movement to flow smoothly from zone to zone.
3. THE INDUSTRIAL-JAPANDI GALLEY KITCHEN
The wet kitchen balances raw textures with organic warmth. Transitioning behind glass partition doors, the cooking workspace adopts a parallel galley formation:
• The Material Dynamic: Deep wood-grain laminate cabinetry lines the lower cooking zone, topped by a heavily veined black marble quartz surface.
• Lighting Precision: Recessed track lights overhead ensure absolute clarity during meal preparation, while slim-profile black metal hardware completes the contemporary edge.
4. THE DEDICATED WALK-IN WARDROBE & STUDY
The design utilises a separate bedroom footprint entirely for wardrobe storage and organisation. An expansive open-closet system combines black iron pipe structural tracking with warm oak drawers. This design maximises every inch of vertical space, providing boutique-style accessibility for an extensive wardrobe while keeping the main sleeping quarters completely free of clutter.
5. THE MASTER SUITE & MULTI-FUNCTIONAL ZONES
The master bedroom features a natural wood ceiling canopy that adds distinct texture overhead.
• The Architectural Glass Partition: To retain a sense of openness and maintain light transmission throughout the private suite, a sleek sliding glass door partitions the productive home office nook from the main sleeping area. This configuration allows the bedroom to feel spacious while offering functional acoustic separation when needed.
• The Workspace Integration: Positioned directly adjacent to the resting zone is a minimalist executive home office setup, complete with integrated wall shelving and warm wood tones that match the overhead canopy to streamline remote workdays.
6. THE PLAYFUL JUNIOR SUITE & MONOLITHIC BATHS
The secondary bedroom shifts into a whimsical, light pink palette featuring curved wall graphics and integrated toy displays for a softer approach.
Meanwhile, the wet utilities return to a boutique aesthetic:
• The Monolithic Terrazzo Vanity: The master bathroom features a custom-poured, seamless concrete-look ramp sink that mimics high-end commercial lounges.
• The Timber-Floored Ensuite: The common bath breaks HDB conventions by pairing light stone walls with durable, rich wood-look floor tiles, completing the relaxing spa atmosphere.
MATERIALS & ACCENTS SPOTLIGHT
A rigorous, disciplined selection of materials bridges the gap between the separate family zones:
• Deep Walnut & Oak Laminates: Applied continuously across the foyer, pantry bar, and kitchen to anchor the spaces with structural warmth.
• Black Anodised Metal & Quartz: Integrated across the kitchen and walk-in wardrobe to offer industrial crispness.
• Concealed LED Warm Strips: Tucked under every floating cabinet and ceiling drop to erase harsh shadows and create the illusion of elevated ceilings.
THE VITAS DIFFERENCE
This resale flat demonstrates that multi-functional living doesn't require compromising on visual breathing room. By treating storage as an architectural element and utilising smart zoning, Vitas Design SG created a highly functional home tailored precisely to the owners' daily habits, timeline, and budget.
