THE DESIGN CHALLENGE
Optimising a highly compact footprint to function seamlessly as both an open-concept entertaining area and a private sanctuary, without compromising cultural identity or storage capacity.

THE BRIEF & COLLABORATION
How do you honour rich cultural roots inside a standard, compact Singapore public housing flat? For this recently completed apartment, Vitas Design SG dismantled the cookie-cutter boundaries of HDB layouts to prove that compact square footage can still house grand cultural identity and top-tier functionality.

The homeowners approached our team with a clear mandate: they wanted an open, breathable home to host family gatherings, a dedicated space to display ancestral heirlooms, and a highly responsive layout that adapts instantly from day use to night-time rest. By introducing raw textures, sweeping sliding partitions, and multi-purpose carpentry, we co-created a modern, humanised sanctuary that celebrates heritage without cluttering the senses.

SEQUENTIAL SPATIAL WALKTHROUGH
1. The Entryway & Heritage Foyer
First impressions dictate the energy of a home. Stepping through the front threshold, visitors are greeted by a raw screed concrete floor that sets a grounded, utilitarian tone.

Instead of a standard shoe cabinet blocking the path, our design team integrated flush, timber-look cabinetry that conceals modern utilities. This raw backdrop allows a intricately carved wooden temple cabinet and traditional brass oil lamps to command attention, immediately establishing the home's unique cultural DNA.

2. The Flexible Living & Communal Zone
Moving past the foyer, the apartment unfolds into an expansive communal hall that entirely rethinks the traditional living room setup. In place of a conventional bulky sofa, we integrated a classic, low-profile Indian daybed (diwan) adorned with patterned cushions, encouraging a relaxed, floor-level lounge culture.

The true masterstroke of this zone is its architectural adaptability. The living space is framed by a massive, ceiling-height sliding wall partition.
• Day Mode: The partition glides completely away into recessed pockets, expanding the communal floor plate for maximum airflow and hosting capacity.
• Night Mode: The sliding wall seals shut to form a fully private room, isolating light and sound.
A heavy, vintage-style brass-fitted sea chest sits in the center as a coffee table, providing both visual weight and deep hidden storage.

3. The Dynamic Multi-Purpose Guest Suite
Behind the primary living room partition lies a masterclass in space optimisation. To avoid their secondary bedroom being empty most of the week, the homeowners installed a custom-engineered Murphy bed mechanism.

When tucked away, the room maintains a completely flush, minimalist white facade that reflects natural light coming from the large perimeter windows. Lowering the bed takes under ten seconds, instantly transitioning the room from an airy yoga studio or home office into a comfortable sleeping zone for guests. This flexible zone shares a seamless link to an en-suite bathroom detailed with custom warm oak framing and earthy textures.

4. The Kitchen & Dining Hub
For Singaporeans, the culinary zone is the anchor of social gatherings. We configured an open-concept culinary footprint defined by a dual-purpose kitchen island wrapped in rich wood-grain laminates.

The island acts as both a casual breakfast counter and a display gallery, featuring warm, low-voltage interior LED lighting to showcase the client's curated collection of brassware and ceramic pottery. Suspended industrial lanterns hang above the counter, tying into a rustic chandelier over the main marble-topped dining table.

Just beyond the cooking zone, the homeowners maximised an adjacent partition wall by constructing a vertical urban herb garden. Terracotta pots, personalised with white script labels, host fresh cooking ingredients directly under a trio of vibrant mosaic pendant lamps.

MATERIALS & ACCENTS SPOTLIGHT
To prevent the compact layout from feeling fragmented, Vitas Design SG utilised a highly disciplined palette of textures to unite the space:
• Industrial Rawness: Seamless concrete-screed flooring runs continuously through the foyer, living, and sleeping zones to elongate visual sightlines.
• Warm Timber Elements: Premium wood-grain laminates with deep tactile textures wrap the custom carpentry, kitchen island, and doors, introducing an organic, human warmth.
• Polished Metallics: Hand-hammered copper storage vessels, brass hardware, and traditional light fixtures inject historical weight and reflective contrast against the matte walls.

THE VITAS DIFFERENCE
This project highlights our core philosophy: elite interior design is not about executing a rigid trend, but about translating a client's lifestyle and heritage into smart architecture. By respecting the strict spatial limitations of Singapore public housing and working within a smart budget, Vitas Design SG delivered a high-performance home tailored perfectly to the family's daily rhythms.
